Introducing 2013 Management Fellow, Casey Krall
Name: Casey Krall
Hometown: Lebanon, PA
Current Organization: Year Up
What inspired you to apply for ProInspire’s Managing for Success Program?
The opportunity to take part in coaching/sharpen my coaching skills over an extended period of time. And, Lucilla and Maurice (who were ProInspire fellows at YU) were pretty awesome.
What has surprised you about being a manager in the non-profit sector?
Coming from the classroom to the staff management, it surprises me that the staff often require a more directive voice than my students.
What is a typical day like for you on the job?
Getting in, expecting to have some time to work at my desk but instead being told about a student/staff fire that needs to be put out. Chasing down students and having interesting conversations. Coaching staff on how to do that so I don’t need to. Meeting(s). Chasing. Eat something. Coaching/chasing. Teaching. Coaching staff around their inter/intra-team issues and decompressing tense situations. Taking care of the contract. Returning emails. Making sure things are ready for the next day.
What attributes or short story can you share about the best manger you’ve ever had?
My manager when I first stepped into this role did a great job of almost never giving me answers. Instead she asked questions that I continue to use, both professionally and personally, to help direct my decision making process.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Watching movies, going to concerts, and taking road trips.
Where do you see yourself in 5, 10, and 20 years?
Teaching somewhere (high school or community college) or writing.
Where have you lived and where would you still like to live?
I grew up in PA, then lived in Oregon for about 8 years where I went to college/grad school. I plan to live in Ireland when I’m old, in a little village where you have to drive down the road to use the telephone.
What advice do you have for a new non-profit manger?
Observe. Observe your team, how they interact with each other, how they interact with you, and how they deliver on the work you give them. Sometimes we can move too fast to notice things that are really apparent.
