Check out Jobs for Change

Last week Change.org launched Jobs for Change, which aims to spark a nationwide movement toward careers in the common good. They plan to build the largest database of nonprofit, government, and social enterprise jobs on the web. Change.org has hired a team of career advisors to provide daily advice and guidance to help people of all backgrounds find and develop a career in social change. They even have a career advisor focused on answering questions from sector switchers.

I did a quick search for jobs in Washington D.C. and found 90 positions. I think that is pretty good considering the site just launched last week!
In addition to searching by location, the Jobs for Change search engine enables users to search listings by job function, work experience, and cause. The cause search is currently limited to the 28 “causes” that Change.org covers. It will be interesting to see how Jobs for Change differentiate themselves from Idealist, the current leader in nonprofit job listings. One way is that Jobs for Change is including “good” jobs beyond the nonprofit sector, including government and social enterprise. That should be appealing to many folks.

I still think that one of the biggest challenges for younger sector switchers is not lack of job postings, but a lack of job postings that are targeted toward their skill set. It seems like organizations are either looking for the C-level switchers (Bridgestar is a great resource for those positions), or they have entry level jobs which don’t leverage the switcher’s prior work experience. It seems like the best success for young business professionals looking to transition is to find an organization that is willing to create a role targeted to their skill set. Have other people found this to be true?
