Introducing 2013 Management Fellow, Noelle Carne
Name: Noelle Carne
Hometown: Sandpoint, Idaho
Current Organization: Capital City Public Charter School
What inspired you to apply for ProInspire’s Managing for Success Program?
My current work is very different from my previous position and I wanted to improve my managerial skills. I was also interested in meeting others in DC in the same sector and learning from their experiences.
What has surprised you about being a manager in the non-profit sector?
There is never a dull moment – you have to be flexible, very resourceful and problem solve with a different mindset then the private sector.
What is a typical day like for you on the job?
The morning starts with traffic duty for the arrival of our students. I do lunch attendance for our middle and high schools followed by traffic duty for dismissal. In between there could be meetings with vendors, administrative paperwork, building maintenance, doing a fire drill, ordering supplies, training on recycling or mentoring a student on their portfolio. It all depends on the day…
What attributes or short story can you share about the best manger you’ve ever had?
I have been very lucky to have had very supportive supervisors that I respect and continue to stay in touch with. I think important attributes of the best managers I have had are open communication, mutual respect, loyalty, and fun.
What advice do you have for other managers?
Always ask for feedback and be able to learn from mistakes. Mistakes will happen, it is how you respond and improve that matters.
What blogs or news do you follow?
I always have check my CNN app!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like to read, travel, cook and learn new things. I also love sports and play basketball, soccer, flag football, tennis and golf.
Where do you see yourself in 5, 10, and 20 years?
In 5-10 years I see myself still doing something professionally in the non-profit or public sector working with disadvantaged youth, hopefully incorporating sports and athletics. I love to travel so hope to incorporate that passion into work as well.
On a typical Friday night, what might you be found doing?
Friday is relaxing at home from a long week or catching one of the great happy hours in DC.
