ProInspire Releases Report on Millennials in the Nonprofit Workforce
Research reveals ten strategies to help nonprofits recruit, retain, and advance Millennial employees.

ProInspire released a new report today that provides nonprofit organizations a deeper understanding of Millennials and a set of strategies to engage this generation in ways that address their specific motivations and needs. A Force for Impact: Millennials in the Nonprofit Sector offers a detailed portrait of the generation born between 1980-2000 and factors that influence their career decisions and work lives. While much has been written on the topic of Millennials, ProInspire focuses specifically on this generation’s desires regarding careers in the nonprofit sector, and how organizations can leverage them for greater impact.

ProInspire identified the need for more intergenerational understanding after engaging with nearly 500 Millennial nonprofit employees and over 70 organizations and foundations through its programs. A common frustration shared by Millennial employees in the sector is that organizations are not meeting their expectations of the workplace, while nonprofit leaders articulated their own challenges in understanding Millennials to maximize workplace effectiveness. A Force for Impact: Millennials in the Nonprofit Sector synthesizes industry research, lessons learned, and input from Millennials in ProInspire’s network to create a set of strategies for organizations to better recruit, retain and advance this generation.

“Millennials comprise the largest generation in the American workforce, and their influence will grow as they continue to pursue careers in the nonprofit sector,” said Monisha Kapila, Founder and CEO of ProInspire. “This generation presents a great opportunity for the nonprofit sector, with so many young people motivated by purpose and a desire to change the world. Yet their career interests can be a challenge for nonprofit organizations that don’t understand the unique factors that shape this cohort. Ultimately, organizations need to build stronger talent cultures and systems that will benefit not only Millennials, but all generations in the workplace.”

The report covers a broad range of topics important to Millennials, including transparency; feedback and coaching; compensation; diversity; flexibility; professional development; leadership opportunities; and career advancement. Ms. Kapila will share findings from the report at the 2015 Independent Sector Conference this week and at the 2016 Nonprofit Talent and Culture Summit in April.
