Results from 2014 Managing for Success – Spring Cohort

 

In August we completed the Spring Managing for Success (M4S) program in Washington D.C. This is the second cohort of the M4S program and we continue to receive excellent feedback on the impact of the program on participants’ abilities to be effective as managers and leaders. About the 2014 Spring DC cohort: 19 participants in total

  • 65% were under age 30, and 35% were between 30-45 years olddc1group
  • 90% are female
  • 47% are persons of color
  • 75% have direct reports
  • 85% are from organizations with under 100 employees
  • Only 10% have previously had management training

  Participating organizations included: Annie E. Casey Foundation Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development Communities In Schools DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative FACETS Good360 International Institute for Sustained Dialogue La Clinica del Pueblo LIFT Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School National Human Services Assembly SeriousFun Children’s Network Turning the Page Some highlights:

  • 100% of participants were very or extremely satisfied with the Managing for Success program
  • 94% of participants indicated the program was very or extremely helpful in improving their management skills
  • After the program, 100% of participants said they see themselves as effective or very effective managers

Program’s impact on participant’s leadership competencies (from pre and post program surveys):

  • 31% increase in participants perceiving they are very influential in their organization
  • 28% increase in participants indicating they are very satisfied in their ability to work effectively with their boss
  • 19% increase in participants indicating they are very effective in managing their time
  • 14% increase in participants indicating they are very effective in communicating with direct reports
  • 14% increase in participants indicating they are very effective in difficult conversations

M4S has impacted how participants work and prepared them for leadership roles. In particular, we received feedback around the four key competencies that are a focus of the program: Managing Self – Greater self-awareness and confidence in my strengths and in the necessary areas for growth – Strengthened my ability to speak up Managing Individuals – Spend more time coaching and providing clear expectations – Better negotiate and define my role at work Managing Results – Better facilitator – Better prepared for meetings and projects Managing Organizations – Improved ability to build strong relationships – Stronger ability to look ahead and understand the big picture We will be refining our evaluation framework for the 2015 M4S programs so we can better understand how an individual’s participation in Managing for Success helps organizations achieve their missions.
